No matter what the economic climate, there will always be a good market for high-quality or rare sculptures. At a recent Sotheby's auction in London, the world record for the highest price paid for a work of art was broken by 'L'Homme qui Marche I', a bronze sculpture by Swiss artist Giacometti. It was bought for $104.3 million, $85 million more than the starting bid. In 2009, a bronze edition of Degas's 'Little Dancer' statue was sold at a Sotheby's auction for £13.3 million, £8 million more than was paid for it five years earlier. One of only ten copies remaining in private hands, this three-foot high statue was one of 28 cast in 1922. The original was made in 1881 from a combination of fabric and wax and is currently on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Furthermore, Edgar Degas' (1834-1917) 'Petite danseuse de quatorze ans', sold at Sotheby's New York in February 2009 for over $13 million.
Antique sculptures, such as Gothic or Renaissance works of art, can also achieve some staggering prices: a South German limewood figure of saint Catherine, by Tilman Riemenschneider (1460-1431) sold for over $6 million in 2008 and Austrian lead bust of the so-called 'Ill humored man', by Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, after 1770, sold for $5.6 million. A 12th century crucifixion, Burgundy, sold for €112,676 at Piasa in Paris in 2008.
Sculptures can be made from a wide variety of materials and this is important to consider when getting a sculpture appraisal. Terracotta, bronze, gilt bronze, wood, stone, marble, alabaster and plaster are all commonly used in sculpture. Because many of these materials are quite expensive and the process of sculpting can often take longer than other artworks, sculpture has been considered throughout history as an elite item only for the very wealthy. However, due to recent developments, such as better casting techniques and the advent of new materials, a fresh market has emerged for sculptures of low to middle value (approximately £300 to £3,000).
Besides the materials used, there are a variety of attributes that can affect a sculpture appraisal. These include the age of the piece, the artist, the condition of the work and the subject matter. If it's a limited edition, the rarity is also important to consider when getting a sculpture appraisal. Whether you're simply curious about your treasure, if you need to get your item insured or if you want to decide a price for selling at an auction or to a dealer, our online sculpture valuations can help you determine the value of the work.
