Even in a poor economic climate, you may be surprised at the result of a print's appraisal. In general, prints have withstood the recession well and the market is strong for all sorts of prints, ranging from the works of Old Masters, through to contemporary works. In 2009, Bonham's sold one of the iconic coloured prints of Marilyn Monroe created by Andy Warhol in 1967. Screen-printed in orange, blue and grey, the piece was numbered 184/250 and signed in pencil by the artist. It sold for £42,000. The full 10 piece set of Marilyn Monroe prints by Warhol, fetched a stunning $1.500.000 at Christie's last year.
Prints such as hand-made lithographs or even wallpaper can be a low-cost option for a buyer who wants a work by a famous artist, and to have the full decorative effect of a piece by that artist. . For example, Damien Hirst has designed a range of wallpapers, some of which were sold during his Pharmacy sale at Sotheby's, a wallpaper featuring images of pills and fictional descriptions.
Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) revitalised the print-making techniques at the end of the 15th century in Nuremberg, where he set up his own workshop. He gave his engravings a wonderful three-dimensional feel thus making them come alive. He transformed the appearance of the illustrated printed book. Among his innovative prints were the Apocalypse series of 1498. In December 2006, Christie’s London sold a complete set of sixteen woodcuts from The Apocalypse (Latin Edition from 1511) for £96,000. Dürer engraved this series, at a time when Last Judgement was thought to be imminent. Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) is also among the masters of engraving. For example, his four series of etchings featured the darker side of life, in a critical manner: Los Caprichos, Los Desastres de la Guerra, Los Disparates and La Tauromaquia, a complete set of 33 etchings, dating from 1816, sold for £168,500 in December 2007, at Christie’s London.
When getting a print appraisal, one of the most important considerations is the rarity of the print. Because prints can be easily reproduced, it is generally important for a print to be part of a limited edition and they are usually numbered to indicate this. Prints have been created for over five centuries and they can range from the earliest woodcut prints, through to contemporary prints such as those by Picasso or Damien Hirst. Very old prints are usually extremely rare and are sometimes unique, so they can generally be expected to be valuable. The artist, the quality of the print, the print's condition and the subject matter are also important considerations. When you get a print appraisal from Value My Stuff Now, our specialist will consider all of these criteria before providing you with an expert and objective valuation.
