The Auction Market for Pop & Film Memorabilia

Beatles-related material usually achieves the strongest and highest prices within Pop and Rock Memorabilia sales. On 10th July 2008, the legendary hand-painted bass drum-skin used on the front cover of the Beatles’ 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band sold for £541,250 at Christie’s South Kensington ($1,071,133). That said, many major artists from the last four decades also enjoy great success: The Rolling Stones. Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, John Lennon... The original album cover artwork by Ray Lowry for London Calling by the Clash made £72,000 at a Bonhams auction. The album was recorded in London during the Summer 1979 and the cover sold in December 2009, for its 30th anniversary. Guitars owned by John Lehnon rarely appear on the market. In 2009 however, John Lennon’s 1958 Hofner Senator Guitar was auctioned in London and sold for £205,250 ($337,226). In 1998, Sotheby's sold the Geri Halliwel Union Jack dress, which she wore when perforning with the Spice Girls at the Brit Awards, for £41.320.

Michael Jackson’s death has undoubtedly brought Music Memorabilia back to the front stage. In November 2009, around 80 pieces of Michael Jackson memorabilia were auctioned at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York. Among them was the rhinestone-encrusted white glove worn by Jackson when he first 'Moonwalked' in 1983. It sold for $350,000 (£212,000), nine times the expected price.

Film Memorabilia also contains some of these highly glamourous collectables - The personality of an actress can definitely enhance the value of her personal effects. In 1999, Christie’s New York sold items from the personal property of Marilyn Monroe for $13,405,785. The Happy Birthday Mr. President dress, worn at Madison Square Garden on 19th May 1962 achieved a world auction record for an article of clothing: $1,267,500. More recently, Audrey Hepburn’s evening grown designed by Hubert de Givenchy for her as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s sold for £467,200.

Collecting Pop & Film Memorabilia

Music memorabilia seems to be a good starting sector for those interested in collecting or investing. According to Emma Wall, journalist at Telegraph, it is a profitable area for investment. ‘While the art world in general may have suffered losses, with reserve prices not being met and dwindled sales, this area of alternative investment continues to grow. This is because, although pop culture collectables may offer a healthy return on sale, profit is not the driving force behind the investment’, she said. Museums have not really been involved in that field so far and a tremendous number of items are still in private hands. With the internet offering a worldwide trading platform though, there are unfortunately many fakes in circulation. Hence, it has become paramount to check the item's authenticity.
