Our Jewellery Expert

The jewellery auction market is a rather fluctuating one, and even though very strong sales can be achieved, it is one where deep knowledge is required to be able to tell what sells and doesn’t. Apart from the intricate market value of the diamonds and gold, the design and saleability is dependent on fashion and trendiness. Our Jewellery expert has worked for over 15 years at Sotheby’s and will be able to give you the best advice and valuation of your items.

The Jewellery Market

You never know when something quite valuable might even find its way to you. It's unusual but it does happen. In an episode of Antiques Roadshow, an owner brought in a ring that was found in some hedge clippings in his garden and which his wife described as something that you might find in a Christmas cracker. Jewellery expert Geoffrey Munn was "dying with excitement" when he saw the item. He then explained to the owner that it was an 8th century Anglo-Saxon ring worth £10,000!

Even in difficult circumstances, the market for jewellery is quite strong and, no matter what the economic climate, a jewellery valuation may just give you a pleasant surprise. Jewellery is mainly made from materials with inherent worth - gold, silver, platinum, diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires - and the value of these materials can account for up to 75% of the overall value. Then the design will come in and constitute a further value factor. This is where the major brands and designers can make a difference in price. Pieces by Cartier, Winston, Tiffany, Buccellati or Bulgari can achieve higher prices than unsigned pieces.

Some Jewellery Auction Results

At the end of 2008, Christie's sold the 17th century, 35.65 carat Wittelsbach diamond for $24.3 million, breaking the previous record for the highest price ever paid for a diamond at auction. In May 2009, Sotheby's sold the Star of Josephine at an auction in Geneva. This internally flawless, vivid blue diamond weighs 7.03 carats and was sold for $9.48 million. At £1.34 million per carat, this shattered the previous world record price per carat for any gemstone. Bonhams reported that 2009 was its most successful year ever for jewellery auctions. A single sale at the end of December brought in over £2.2 million, confirming that beautiful jewelled items have a continuing attraction and value. Especially during times of recession, people revert to solid values where gold and jewelry are at the forefront of people's secure investments.
