The market for old glass is fairly slow at the moment, mostly because the new generation of collectors hasn’t picked up on it yet. That makes it a great time to purchase antique glass items. Our expert within this field confirms that it is a market with huge opportunities for buyers, but also that the rare and good pieces still make some substantial prices. Our expert would be delighted to examine the photographs of your glass objects, whether antique or modern.

Even in the current fairly low market, glass items that go beyond the functional to be exquisite works of art can still fetch extremely high prices. For example, at a recent Sotheby's auction, a pair of enamelled glass bottles, ornately detailed and dating from approximately 1878, sold for £81,600 (£30,000 over the estimated value)! You never know when an item that you own could be quite valuable - especially if you don't know much about its history. In an episode of the Antiques Roadshow, Scottish owners of a glass bowl - one that they found at a car boot sale for £1 - were left shocked when the item was valued at £25,000. The bowl had been bought for use as a planter and then stored in the loft for several years. It was almost put in the rubbish bin but saved simply because the Roadshow was coming to town. The bowl was later sold at a Christie's auction for £32,450.
Also Middle Eastern and Oriental glass can be very collectable. A rare Mamluk enamelled glass basin was sold at Sotheby's for £3,093,500 and a A Mamluk enamelled glass and gilded clear glass jug sold at Christie's (Collection of the late baroness Batsheva de Rothschild) for £3,303,750.
The size, age, origin and decoration of an item are all important things to consider when getting an antique glass valuation. Most important is the condition of an item, as even a small chip or crack can significantly affect the value. Therefore, it's important to provide accurate photographs and descriptions of items you'd like to have valued. Even modern design pieces can make substantial sums of money. The market for these design glass pieces has become quite strong lately.
