The Auction Market for Antique Furniture

There is always a need for furniture and as a functional piece of art, collectable and antique furniture continues to be valuable. However, just as fashions in clothing change, so do the fashions of furniture, and hence their value. The auction market for furniture hasn't been the strongest over these past few years. This means that today is one of the most appealing markets for buyers and excellent pieces of good quality can be bought at reasonable prices.

In 2004, the Badminton Cabinet was auctioned by Christie's for a record-breaking £19 million, making it the most expensive piece of furniture ever sold. Measuring over 14 feet high, this ornate Italian cabinet dates from 1726 and was last sold in 1990 for £9.6 million, meaning that in less than 15 years, it more than doubled in value! On the other side of the furniture spectrum, we see pieces being sold for incredibly reasonable prices, and ValueMyStuffNow can help you to decide on a prospective purchase by offering an impartial third party opinion.

The market for fine English furniture is quite buoyant at the moment: a George II parcel-gilt padouk cabinet-on-stand, attributed to Thomas Chippendale, 1755-1760 sold at Christie's for £2,729,250 and a pair of George III giltwood armchairs, designed by Robert Adam and made by Thomas Chippendale, 1765, sold there too for £2,281,250. The very best of French furniture continues to achieve some striking results. In 2007, Sotheby's Paris sold a gilt-bronze mounted marquetry commode en console, Transition Louis XV-Louis XVI, circa 1767-1768, stamped J. H. Riesener for €4 million. Even 19th century French furniture has become extremely collectable, with a French 'Japonisant' ormolu-mounted Brazilian rosewood and lacquer cabinet on stand by Edouard Lievre selling last year at Bonhams for over £1.8 million.

Determining the Value of Furniture

A furniture appraisal should consider the item's age, style, size and origin. The condition is also extremely important: an item in exceptional condition is typically worth more than an item that has become a bit wobbly or has some conservation issues. It's also important that a piece hasn't been over-restored. Some people, with the best of intentions, try to repair a piece of furniture, only to see the value drop significantly. We all dream of finding an object that's worth far more than anybody could have expected and on an episode of Antiques Roadshow filmed in Glasgow, that's just what happened. A chair passed down as a family heirloom was discovered to be an original Chippendale worth over £35,000. The owner chose to keep the chair, rather than sell it: being a very comfortable chair, he explained he would continue using it on a daily basis!
